The Creeks Division is restoring an area along San Roque Creek in Stevens Park in partnership with the Fire Department and the Parks and Recreation Department. The project focuses on improving wildfire resilience while restoring native riparian habitat.

In fall 2025, the City held community meetings with neighborhood residents to share plans for wildfire hazard reduction under the Wildfire Resiliency Project (WRP) and creek restoration efforts. The WRP helps reduce wildfire risk in City open spaces by removing invasive plants that can fuel fires and increase fire intensity. Hazard reduction work in Stevens Park is expected to continue through spring 2026, followed by ongoing maintenance to prevent invasive species from returning near the creek.

Restoration work will focus on the lower section of San Roque Creek, where erosion, exposed tree roots, and limited native vegetation are currently present. The project will include the installation of more than 1,600 native trees and riparian plants, irrigation to help the plants and trees get established, and continued invasive species management. Planting and irrigation installation are expected to begin in the fall of 2026 and be completed by the end of the year.

The project will help restore habitat, improve water quality, and support the creek's natural function while enhancing this well-used area of Stevens Park for the community.
