TRAVEL NOTICE 6/29–7/18: HWY 217 between Hollister Ave and Sandspit Rd will be closed overnight (10 PM–6 AM) from Monday night through Saturday morning each week. Please use HWY 101/Fairview Ave exits or an alternate route. Project info.
Do you live on the Westside and have space for a street tree in the parkway in front of your home or building? If you’re willing to help care for young trees by watering them as they get established, we’d love to partner with you!
Residents with grass or open soil between the sidewalk and street may qualify to receive free street trees planted by the City. Sign up to be a Tree Steward below and we’ll plant a Street Tree in the parkway in front of your home!
Verify that you live in the area accepting applications and submit an application.
If you qualify and there is space for a tree, we will send out our team to plant a tree in your parkway. We follow the City's Street Tree Designation List to determine what species works best on your street.
Once your tree is planted, it will need water for the first two years while its roots grow into the ground. As a Tree Steward, you will receive two Tree Care Stipends over the next two years.
Taking care of the tree now makes a big difference for its future!
This program is currently accepting applications for the Westside. To see if your street has a tree well available visit our map (link to come asap).
This program is sponsored by Santa Barbara Clean Energy (SBCE) and is available to SBCE customers. To confirm you are a customer, refer to the generation page of your energy bill and look for “Santa Barbara Clean Energy.” If you live within the City limits, you are very likely a customer.
The Tree Care Stipend is two (2) $25 checks to Tree Stewards over the course of the two year establishment period to cover costs associated with tree care. Checks will be sent to the address on the application.
Congrats! You should have received an email with an estimation of when to expect a tree. When we have a more accurate timeline we will reach out. Rest assured we are working hard to get your tree planted!
We’ll take care of the planting; all you have to do is water the tree by filling the slow-release watering bag ("gator bag") installed along with the tree. A good rule of thumb is to check every week to see if the soil is dry. If so, slowly add at least 10 gallons of water once a week.
Email City staff at SBCEStreetTrees@SantaBarbaraCA.gov with any questions.
