Single-Use Materials

Body

Single-use plastics are used for just a few minutes, but they can last in the environment for hundreds of years, breaking down into microplastics rather than fully decomposing. Once littered, they’re easily carried by wind and stormwater into creeks, beaches, and the ocean.

On March 18, 2026, the Santa Barbara City Council Updated Chapters 9.150, 9.160, and 9.165 of the Santa Barbara Municipal Code. The ordinance is aimed at reducing marine debris carried through storm drains, one of the main pathways through which plastics enter local waterways.
