Local Clean Energy Goals
The Santa Barbara Clean Energy (SBCE) Implementation Plan aims to transition the City to 100% renewable electricity by 2035 per City Council's 2017 commitment. This plan includes the development of renewable energy projects such as solar and wind, and the implementation of innovative programs to support this transition.
SBCE offers various options for residents and businesses to choose their level of clean energy, ranging from 50% carbon-free to 100% carbon-free electricity. The plan also highlights the importance of energy efficiency and the promotion of electric vehicles to reduce carbon emissions from transportation.
SBCE's Integrated Resource Plan provides a framework for ensuring reliable and sustainable energy resources, focusing on local control and community resilience. It emphasizes the need for a mix of energy sources and the integration of new technologies to meet future energy demands.
Additionally, the Strategic Energy Plan outlines specific policies and actions needed to achieve these goals, including community and municipal projects aimed at reducing the City's carbon footprint. The plan includes efforts to improve energy efficiency in buildings, support the adoption of electric vehicles, and promote renewable energy installations across the City.
City Council adopted an ambitious Climate Action Plan in 2024 that serves as the City’s roadmap to achieve the goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2035 through reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the City and new strategies to remove carbon from the atmosphere.
